The Garden as Preventative Medicine: Why Green Spaces Improve Health

Exposure to green space is strongly associated with improved physical and mental health outcomes.

A large-scale global meta-analysis published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that individuals living near green spaces had lower rates of depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization recognizes urban green space as a public health intervention.

In the United Kingdom and United States, access to private gardens is limited for many residents, particularly in urban centers. Many rely on public parks for green exposure.

South Africa presents a distinct advantage. According to Statistics South Africa, a significant proportion of residential properties include private yards or garden space. Combined with a favourable climate - averaging over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually in many provinces - home gardening is far more accessible year-round.

Time spent in gardens has been shown to lower cortisol levels, improve sleep quality and increase physical activity. Even 20–30 minutes outdoors can measurably reduce stress markers.

A well-designed garden is not ornamental but therapeutic infrastructure.

If you have access to outdoor space, cultivating it intentionally may be one of the most accessible wellness investments available.
