When I first took public ownership of my passion for wellness and turned it into a business, I expected curiosity, support or even celebration. Instead, what I encountered was suspicious silence, disbelief and dismissal from those who knew me before this new phase of my life.
Some questioned the credibility of my offerings. Others even challenged my world-calss formal education, international business training and career, as though my transformation into the wellness space erased everything I had built before. At first, I couldn’t understand the motives behind this harassment and discrediting behaviour.
The Fear of Change
In time, I came to realise that my transformation was not only about me. For some, it was met with loss and fear - loss of the “version” of me they once felt close to and fear of disconnect from the new chapter I had entered without warning.
Some even went as far as trying to pull me back into who I had evolved from by deliberately orchestrating public setbacks, triggers and tests in hopes of “exposing” me in an “unwell” state in order to discredit the renewed version of myself I had openly embraced.
Turning Triggers Into Invitations
What I initially received as negative, I later came to see as an invitation. These attempts to silence my new-found transformation became reminders to re-affirm who I had become and who I was yet to be, rather than fall back into a weaker version of myself that did not honour what I am truly capable of.
This shift in perspective has been one of my most powerful lessons. It is the reason I can now view external doubt and distractions not as defeats, but as opportunities to root deeper into my truth.
Living with Intention
Many of my decisions have been unconventional - not easy to predict, but always anchored in intention. That intention has sustained me through difficult seasons and it continues to guide me today.
I remember a lesson from my postgraduate studies at UCT, shared by my lecturer Stuart Hendry: “Live life by design, not by default.”
Those words shaped me and today they form a central message in how I live today.
The Gift of Mystery
What once felt like suspicious attention has become an asset. I’ve learned to embrace being unpredictable - it protects my plans, shields me from interference and gives me space to grow without external pressure.
Yes, I still get triggered at times, but - however long it may take - I always find my grounding again. And for that, I am grateful.
